Condensate Pumps
Your HVAC system is designed to keep you and your family comfortable year–round. However, if something goes wrong with any one of its parts, your run the risk of not having access to its heating or cooling power when they’re needed the most.
One such part is the condensate pump which is responsible for removing the excess condensate that builds up from steady use of a central air conditioner, heat exchanger, or high efficiency furnace. It’s often difficult for the average homeowner to spot symptoms, but if you suspect any type of problem with your condensate pump, call Basnett Plumbing, Heating & AC today. Our trained experts offer complete HVAC services in the MetroWest area and can ensure your condensate pump is working as it should or replace it with a new one if necessary.
Condensate Pump Installation
Whether you need a condensate pump depends largely on how your system is setup. If any parts of your central air conditioning system are inside your home, condensate is likely. Even if your system is mostly outside, it’s possible for condensate to leak into your home and cause damage.
For both of these reasons, it’s a good idea to keep a close eye on your system and make sure no excess vapor or condensate is being released into your home. If it is, it may be time for a pump upgrade or repair.
The average household condensate pump holds between 0.5 and 1 gallon and consists of a small device with a plastic impeller to pump the liquid away from the device. If your needs are limited, your condensate pump may not have a tank at all and instead will be placed directly in the drip pan for your device. However, larger pumps usually have tanks and may be placed in a sump pit.
Condensate Problems
While it may look like water, condensate is actually a combination of water, dust, pathogens, and chemicals from your HVAC system. It can be acidic and possibly hot if it comes off in the form of steam from a furnace. As a result, it is not safe to ignore a condensate leak, even if it doesn’t seem to be causing damage to your home.
If there is no easy way to remove the condensate with a pump, piping may need to be installed to help remove the condensate from your home. Your contractor can help you better determine which option is best for your HVAC system.
