Metrowest Boston Heating Tip

Did you know that your old, low-efficiency furnace can be up to 20 percent less efficient than their furnaces made today? Older furnaces have continuous pilot lights, heavy heat exchangers, and natural drafts, all of which reduce their effectiveness. A new furnace will not only heat your home better, it will also be safer. If you are looking for a way to make your home more environmentally friendly, a  new furnace is a great place to start!

Furnace Replacement Warning Signs

How do you know it’s time for a new furnace? There are often warning signs that crop up well before the old furnace breaks. If you catch them early enough, you’ll have plenty of time to shop around and pick the perfect model for your home.

The first warning sign that your furnace is no longer getting the job done is frequent break downs. If you call a technician seemingly every month to have your furnace repaired, it’s likely more than a bad part or a clogged vent. Your furnace is probably about to die. Instead of having it repaired constantly, start researching replacements so you can cut down on your repair costs and be ready before the old one breaks completely.

Another major sign that you need a new furnace is that the old one simply doesn’t do as good a job anymore. If you notice an increase in your energy bills or if the old furnace is no longer heating your entire home evenly, it might not have the capacity to heat your home any longer.

Furnace Efficiency & Upgrade Costs

When you decide that your old furnace isn’t going to cut it any longer, there are two factors to consider in a replacement. First, how efficient is the new model, and second, how much will it cost to both install and run the replacement furnace?

In terms of efficiency, all furnaces are governed by the AFUE rating system. An AFUE rating measures how much fuel the furnace converts into heat. If your furnace has an AFUE rating of 80%, it converts 80% of the fuel it consumes into heat for your home. In fact, 80% is the lowest rated furnace you can buy, so if you have an old unrated furnace, this is likely an upgrade. However, if you’re willing to pay more up front for a higher rated furnace, newer models have AFUE ratings of up to 98%.

The fuel type you use will also impact your costs. Gas is the least expensive fuel type to operate and gas furnaces generally have the highest AFUE ratings on the market. However, not all homes have gas hookups available. For those that don’t, oil and electric furnaces are the only alternatives. Keep in mind that electricity is the most expensive fuel–type for a furnace.
