Water Pipe Materials

Standard water pipes have gone through some pretty significant changes over the years. Lead used to be the standard material for water piping, but obviously that has long since changed because of the health risks involved. Then copper took over as the material of choice, and is still used in many homes throughout the world. However, there are some other options available that you should also consider.

One such option is polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, heavy duty plastic polymer that is commonly used in home plumbing applications. PVC has the advantage of not being prone to rust like metal pipes are. And while some are concerned about the potential for chemicals from the PVC seeping into the water supply, the pipes used in home plumbing do not contain the same potentially hazardous chemicals as some other products made from PVC, so these fears are unwarranted.

Another option for home water piping is stainless steel. It is also less prone to rust and corrosion than copper, although not to the same extent as PVC. However, stainless steel does not carry some of the same concerns about leeching and durability that PVC does.

Water Piping Service

These are just three options for the water piping in your home. Each of these offers its own benefits, and there are other options to consider as well. Which material will be the best for you and your family depends on a number of factors, including local climate and water composition, building codes, individual needs and your budget.

The best way to choose which piping material is right for you and your family is to consult a trained professional. When replacing old pipes or installing a brand new system, you need someone who is familiar with all the materials in question so that you wind up with water piping that is best for you.
