Heat Pump Maintenance

A heat pump system may be a relatively simple machine used to heat and cool your home, but it has a number of moving parts that need to be serviced occasionally. Without the maintenance recommended by the manufacturer a heat pump will age faster and eventually break down much sooner than it otherwise would have. That’s why it’s so important to have a solid maintenance plan in place from the moment your heat pump is installed.

If you’re worried about your heat pump or would like to make sure it gets the service it deserves from day one, call Basnett Plumbing, Heating & AC. Our MetroWest area heat pump maintenance technicians have developed a reputation for quick and efficient service on a full range of heat pumps from all major brands.

Home Heat Pump Maintenance

While your heat pump system will require annual maintenance from a trained technician, there are a few things you can do at home to help prevent the need for repairs between maintenance visits. To start, keep in mind that your heat pump is used throughout the year. At any given time, it’s likely to be heating or cooling your home. That’s a lot of work for one appliance, so you need to be sure it stays clean.

There are a number of filters in the heat pump that can be changed by the homeowner without any issue. You can either have a service technician show you how during setup or you can follow the instructions in your owner’s manual. If the filter can be swapped out without removing any parts or changing any settings, feel free to make the change.

You should also keep a close eye on the cleanliness of the area around your heat pump. Because your heat pump will be outside, the ground immediately surrounding it must be kept clear of brush and debris. It should be out of the way, where no cars park or children play and at least once a week any dirt or debris that has blown up against it should be removed. In the winter, make sure to remove any snow that falls near your heat pump so it doesn’t cause any problems.

Professional Heat Pump Maintenance

These regular maintenance tasks will ensure your heat pump works smoothly throughout the year between professional maintenance visits. During annual visits, a technician will check all of the moving parts in your heat pump and make sure there is no excess wear and tear that needs to be addressed. More importantly, a professional maintenance technician will check and clean all non–replaceable filters and do diagnostic tests on your ductwork to make sure it’s effectively transferring air between the heat pump and all of the rooms of your home.
