4 Ways to Maintain Your Air Conditioner Throughout the Season

There are some things that most homeowners with a central air conditioner can agree on. They hope that their air conditioners won’t break down in the middle of summer. They want to lower their cooling costs. And they want their air conditioners to have a long lifespan.

Keeping up on AC maintenance is the best way to see that this happens. Call a technician for AC maintenance at the beginning of the summer or in the spring in order to get a system tune-up that helps it to run more efficiently. And throughout the summer, follow these simple steps.

  1. Change the filter. Changing the air filter is something that is easy for most people to do. Stock up on air filters now so that you have plenty available for the rest of the season. Change it once a month so that air can continue to flow through with ease, reducing the chances of problems within the air conditioner.
  2. Notice when the system is in trouble. It’s not worth ignoring your air conditioner when something seems off. We know you don’t want to pay for repairs, but it’s not going to get better on its own. If the air conditioner is cooling slowly, short cycling on and off, or making strange noises, it may soon get worse and cost you more in the long run.
  3. Keep the outside portion clean. The outside unit should not be covered in debris or shrouded by shrubbery. Clear away items from the outside unit so it can perform effectively. And make sure that outside coil is cleaned once a year, something that can be done during a maintenance visit.
  4. Set the temperature efficiently. Find the warmest agreeable temperature that is still cool enough for everyone in the home to be comfortable. The US Department of Energy recommends 78°.
