What is Geothermal Energy?

Geothermal energy is a renewable energy source from heat stored beneath the Earth's surface. It originates from the radioactive decay of minerals in the Earth's crust and the heat absorbed by the sun. This energy is harnessed for various purposes, including heating, cooling, and electricity generation.

There are three main types of geothermal energy:

  1. Direct Use: In direct-use geothermal systems, hot water from underground reservoirs is pumped to the surface to heat buildings, greenhouses, or industrial processes directly. This method is commonly used for heating purposes in areas with accessible geothermal resources.
  2. Geothermal Heat Pumps: Geothermal heat pumps use the relatively constant temperature of the Earth below the surface to heat and cool buildings. They transfer heat between the ground and a building by circulating a fluid through underground pipes. In winter, the fluid absorbs heat from the ground and transfers it indoors, while in summer, the process is reversed to cool the building.
  3. Geothermal Power Generation: Geothermal power plants convert the heat from underground reservoirs into electricity. This process typically involves drilling wells into hot rock or reservoirs of hot water, which then generates steam to drive turbines connected to generators. The electricity generated can be used to power homes, businesses, and industries.

Why Choose Geothermal Energy?

  • Clean & Renewable: Geothermal energy taps into the Earth's natural heat, providing a clean and renewable energy source that reduces your carbon footprint and supports environmental conservation efforts.
  • Cost-Effective: Say goodbye to high energy bills. Geothermal systems offer long-term savings by harnessing the stable temperatures below the Earth's surface for heating, cooling, and hot water needs.
  • Reliable & Efficient: Experience consistent comfort year-round with geothermal heating and cooling systems. Enjoy reliable performance, exceptional efficiency, and minimal maintenance requirements.

Qualify for the Mass Save Rebate

If your existing heat pump is powered by electricity, oil, or gas, you may qualify for a rebate if you upgrade to an ENERGY STAR® certified geothermal or ground-sourced heat pump.

This rebate opportunity is possible through the Mass Save Rebate Program. Rebates depend on whether the ground-sourced heat pump system is installed for the entire home or just a portion.

  • Partial-Home Rebate: This rebate is for customers who install heat pumps in only one area of their home. The amount is determined by the size (tonnage) of the equipment. The rebate for qualifying customers is $2,000 per tonnage, up to $15,000.
  • Whole-Home Rebate: Customers who install geothermal heat pumps as the primary source for heating and cooling their homes can qualify for a $15,000 rebate.
  • Income-Driven Rebate: Income-qualifying customers can earn up to $25,000 for partial- or whole-home geothermal heat pump installations.

Earning the Mass Save Rebate does not disqualify customers from earning a federal tax credit, which grants up to 30 percent of installation costs to homeowners who install a qualifying ENERGY STAR® certified geothermal heat pump.

The Mass Save Rebate Program is designed to make green energy solutions more accessible, helping you save money while investing in a sustainable future. For more information about the Mass Save Rebate Program, qualifications, or exceptions, call us at 978-431-2906 or visit the official Mass Save Rebate website.
