Repair vs Replace

How Do You Know When to Repair vs. Replace?

It's one of the most common questions we hear at Basnett. There's no single right answer — but there are two simple industry guidelines that give you a solid starting point before you call anyone.

📐 The 50% Rule

If the cost to repair your system is more than 50% of what a new system would cost, replacement is usually the smarter financial decision.

Example: Repair quote is $2,000. A new system costs $6,000. That's 33% — repair is likely fine. But if the repair was $3,500? That's nearly 60% — time to think seriously about replacing.

Repair ÷ Replacement Cost > 50% → Consider Replacing

🔢 The Rule of 5000

Multiply your system's age (in years) by the repair cost (in dollars). If the result is above 5,000 — replace. Below 5,000 — repair may still make sense.

Example: System is 12 years old. Repair costs $500. 12 × 500 = 6,000 — above $5,000, lean toward replacement. At $300 repair: 12 × 300 = 3,600 — repair is reasonable.

Age × Repair Cost > $5,000 → Consider Replacing

A note from Basnett: These rules are a starting point — not a final answer. A 15-year-old system in excellent shape with a minor repair might be worth fixing. A 10-year-old system that's broken down three times in two years might not be. Our team will give you an honest assessment either way. We've been doing this since 1987 and we're not here to sell you something you don't need.

The Rule of 5000 — a widely used HVAC industry guideline:
Multiply your system's age (in years) by the estimated repair cost. If that number is above $5,000, most professionals say replacement makes more financial sense than repair.
